The Hippocampus~ A little Science with your Art

Seahorse is the title given to 54 species of marine fish in the genus Hippocampus. "Hippocampus" comes from the Ancient Greek hippos meaning "horse" and kampos meaning "sea monster".[2]  (Taken from Wikipedia)

The Hungarian neuroscientist László Seress' 1980 preparation of the human hippocampus and fornix compared with a seahorse.

You are probably wondering why I am sharing this with you.  My husband is a Neuroscientist and studies the part of the brain called the "hippocampus".  I made this piece for his office.  When he became tenured I gave him a beautiful crystal Seahorse for his office, and now this.

Here is a little bit about what my husband does taken from MITnews.

Dr. Matthew Wilson, associate professor of the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, has been promoted to associate professor with tenure. Wilson studies mechanisms of learning and memory in the brain; his research contributions include GENESIS, a software package for large-scale simulation of biological neural networks, and the "tetrode" technology for recording simultaneously from large numbers of neurons in freely moving animals. He has used his new techniques to make major discoveries in the way mammalian (rat) brains explore, organize, recall and use spatial memories. He has gone on to explore the role of the hippocampus in memory; the relationship between activities in the hippocampus and the cortex for preserving and ordering memory; and the role of REM sleep as a mechanism for reevaluation and reorganization of existing memories. Wilson received the B.S. in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1983, the M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1986, and the Ph.D. in computational and neural systems from the California Institute of Technology in 1990.

I am very proud of my husband, and rarely share private information on my blog.  I hope you don't mind, once in awhile.

I have always been fascinated by seahorses. I remember watching a video of a seahorse giving birth in science class while in elementary school.(By the way, it is the male that gives birth).  I loved watching Jacques Cousteau and his oceanic expeditions.  I am a Pisces.  Maybe that is why I love sealife.  I used to dream of scuba diving when I was little.

Finally I am entering this image to the Make It Crafty DT call.  I love this image and enjoyed coloring it with my copics.  The white highlights are from a white gel pen.

I hope I didn't bore you with my long post.  Thanks so much for stopping by.

Janice

Peachy Keen Challenge 13-35

Hello friends!  Time for a Peachy Keen Photo Inspiration challenge.  Here is the photo...

And here is my card.

I have used this set many times.  I love the mushrooms and the tree stump for making the gnome house.  I stamped the gnomes onto shrink plastic with Stazon ink and colored them with Sharpie fine line markers.  I used Copics to color the scene.
I hope you will check out what the other designers have made and it would be awesome if you find time to play along!  Have a great week!

PKS/Katie Sue Designs (Home of Flower Soft) Combined Blog Hop

Good morning everyone!  Hope you are having a wonderful day!  If you have arrived here from Cieble Glazer's blog then you are in the right place.  If not you will want to start at the beginning, Katie Sue Designs (The Home of Flower Soft).  Make sure you comment on each post to increase your odds of winning a prize!  Good luck!

I have 2 cards to share with you.  I created a scene with this adorable pooch from PKSC-20 August 2013.  He is being a naughty pup!  He has dug far too many holes in the ground looking for his bone.  I used Ultra Fine Black for the soil.

For my second card I used Flower Soft Diamond range Polar White, to create this snowy scene.  The stamp set I used for this cute winter scene is an oldie but GOODIE!! PK-019 What's So Funny Snowman

I hope you have enjoyed my projects for today!  Now hop on over to the ever so talented Lorie Souther 's  blog!  Thanks so much for hopping!

Hugs and smiles,

Janice

Copic Ink Background

Hello friends!  Here is  a card I made using a tutorial from Splitcoaststampers.
The tutorial is called Copic Ink Background.  I have a few photos of my own, however their tutorial has photos and video if you would like to see it in greater detail.

These are the supplies I used along with glossy cardstock.  First drop various drops of ink onto the glossy cardstock.  Then dip various size circles in the hand sanitizer, then onto the cardstock.  When dry you will have a nice piece of patterned paper for your design.    I used mine for an ocean/aquarium background.

Here is my finished card.

I used sandpaper for the ocean floor along with various punches to create the scene.  I love that adorable octopus which is from PKSC-18 June 2013 kit.  The sentiment is from that set as well!  Thanks so much for having a look and have a wonderful day!

Hugs and smiles,
Janice

Peachy Keen Cuteness!

Here is a card I made with the last stamp release.  PKSC-20 August 2013.

You may have seen this at the release party.  It was for the office supply challenge.  I found these vintage file tabs at a thrift store and used them as an embellishment.

This card was for the back to school challenge and I used PKSC-08 August 2012, which is the perfect set for back to school.  I love the teacher and the variety of stamps included in this set.

Hope you are enjoying your day!

Hugs and smiles,
Janice

Peachy Keen August Sneak Peeks

Hello friends!  Hope you are all well and enjoying your summer!  It is day 2 of the August sneak peeks.  If you missed day 1 you may click here.  This is another awesome release and one that I am sure you will want in your collection.  Here is an easel card that I made with the new stamps.

I had so much FUN creating this scene.  Angelica recently got a new puppy and they call her Chelsea, so I named my paper puppy Chelsea too and colored her like a golden retriever.  She is one happy puppy because she received a large pile of bones for a gift.

There will be 2 more nights of sneaks and then the big release party on Monday August 5th at 6pm central, 7pm Eastern at the Peachy Keen Connection.  It's always fun playing a little trivia, chatting it up with friends, and playing along with the challenges.  All that fun with a chance to win prizes!  Hope to see you there!

Hugs and smiles,
Janice

PKC-13-31 Anything Goes

Hello friends!  Time for a new challenge at Peachy Keen Stamps.  This weeks challenge is PKC-13-31 Anything Goes.  I chose to make some Christmas decor.  I love PK-350 Colby and Jack Cheese set.  They are the cutest mice, don't you think?

I also used PK-020 Snow Flakey, PK-231 Snowflakes for the tree, and PK-156 Lucy's ABC's and 123's Solids, for the JOY banner.  The images were colored with copics and the sparkly snow is Liquid Pearls, white opal and Martha Stewarts crystal coarse glitter.  The presents were stamped from a retired set, but PK-148 Snow Gifts has some present stamps.

Thanks for stopping by.  I hope you will check out what the other designers have made and we would love to see what you create with your Peachy Keen Stamps.

Please come back later tonight for Day 2 of our August stamp release.

Hugs and smiles,
Janice

Make it Crafty Tea Party

Welcome to the very special Make it Crafty Tea Party!

Today, I'm joining the fun with a collection of Make it Crafty fans from around the world,
serving you a delicious array of crafty delights to celebrate not only the magical release of ‘Alice in Wonderland’
but also Make it Crafty’s THIRD Birthday!!

What better way to celebrate than a tea party full of Make it Crafty fans?

As you chase the white rabbit down holes, through small doors, around corners and more…
keep your eye out for hidden letters, collecting them along the way.
Simply decipher the ‘question’ and then enter the answer at the end of the hop for a chance to win the grand prize!

It wouldn’t be a fun tea party without hidden prizes along the way,
so make sure you comment as you chase the rabbit for a chance to win more prizes!
------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully you’ve found your way through the door from Gloria's blog,
but if you’ve just fallen down the hole then you might want to start back at Make it Crafty with Zoe.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The guests were given the option to play with 6 images from the new collection and I chose to get creative with Curious Alice.  I made a scene by adding some whimsical elements and coloring it with Copics.

My second image was White Rabbit.  I also added whimsical elements and colored the image with Copics.

The fun doesn’t stop here and if you head through this door you’ll find your way to Martina's blog.  But before you leave don't forget about your letter.

Thanks so much for hopping and have FUN!!  Good luck!!  Just in case you can't see my letter, it is the letter h.

Hugs and smiles,
Janice
